Pyre: Soundtrack & Questions 2
Your dyslexic, how does that manifest within your writing?
I’ve been told I have a weird style. Often challenging, poetic. I make a lot of mistakes, misspell, I jumble my sentence structures, misplace words, don’t know how to use all the grammar, but the flip side is I find it easy to lose myself in the stories. I play in the voices of the characters and find rhythms and beats within their motivations, like snare drums and riffs: you know what they say, you can never have enough cowbells.
Also, I love dialogue. I often don’t see the reason to disturb it with telling you what a character is doing as they speak, not unless it is essential or adding to the scene. Let the characters converse and let the reader fill in the rest. Let the reader live inside the story.
And, I’m going to sound like a right knob, I don’t see colours the same as many other people, or landscapes. A landscape to me is like the sound of a piano, something less literal.
In the days before the launch of the book, how did you feel?
I don’t think my anxiety could have been worse. I don’t know if other writers feel the same but I would happily have released Pyre into the world without any noise being made and quietly go about my day. In the end, that’s what I did but I wanted Pyre to be out there to at least have something to point to and be able to say, I did that.
What if nobody reads it?
So be it but they certainly won’t if I don’t tell anyone about it.
What if nobody likes it?
What if people like it? What if people think it’s great? What if people think it’s okay? Once it’s out there I can’t do anything about it, it is what it is. The book stands on its own two feet. People’s opinion is their own. I can’t change it, I can only write what I want to write.
But I’m told some people do think it’s quite good.
What if people find a mistake in it?
I’m dyslexic, I think it is inevitable. Please be kind.
Also, some people pre-ordered and got sent a draft version which was never intended for publication. You can tell because the cover is not straight. If you have one of those contact me and I’ll make sure it is replaced.
What if they don’t like what it is about
It’s about a serial killer, everyone loves a serial killer story, don’t they…except those who don’t, and that’s fine.
And how can someone get hold of Pyre?
